Welcome to Kings Dominion: The Unoffical Guide.
Thank you for visiting.
This site is maintained by someone who has held season passes to
Kings Dominion for several years. It contains tips
learned
from visiting park. It also features more than 100 pictures
arranged as a Virtual
Tour
Of Kings Dominion. These photos should give you a feel for
what
it's like to actually visit Paramount's Kings Dominion. I
hope
this information allows you to get the most from the Kings Dominion
amusement
park attractions and the water park. As the name states, this
site
is unoffical. It is not associated in any way with Kings Dominion
or Paramount Parks.
PARK OVERVIEW
Paramount's Kings
Dominion is best described as a rollercoaster and thrill park,
with a healthy balance of little kid attractions and its own water park. Kings Dominion is
usually the nation's #1 or #2 amusement park based
on the number of operational rollercoasters. The
rollercoasters are complimented by other thrill rides. The
overall impression that Paramount wants you to have a fast and wild
time when you visit.
Kings Dominion does a good job of keeping itself up-to-date.
It adds a major attraction and few minor new rides each season.
The park's core attractions are well preserved, so fans the Eiffel
Tower, Rebel Yell and tree-lined Grizzly coaster
can always return to enjoy these old favorites. There is a nice balance
of rides that appeal to young kids, teens
and adults.
Kings Dominion opened in 1975. This was the same time Busch
Gardens opened its amusement park in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Locals thought Virginia couldn't support two large theme parks.
However, both parks have thrived. Busch Gardens appeals to
visitors to Colonial Williamsburg and Virginia Beach with its emphasis
on themed rides, landscaping and animals.
Kings Dominion closed the Lion Country Safari portion of its park.
Kings Dominion now focuses on raw thrills and its water park.
Locals from Richmond, Fredericksburg and Northern Virginia will
find it appealing to make shorter but more frequent visits using a
season pass.
KINGS DOMINION PARK PLUSES
> Large number and variety of rollercoasters.
> Good quality of traditional
amusement park rides (Scrambler, Bumper Cars, Etc.)
> Affordable season pass rates.
> Access to water park
area included in theme park admission price.
> Generally acceptable crowds.
> Broad cross section of rides that appeal to young kids,
teens and adults alike.
Adventurous families, teens and rollercoaster enthusiasts will enjoy
Kings Dominion for it unapologetic focus on thrills and fun.
If you're seeking a lot of fuzzy character, cleverly themed rides
and feel-good shows you may be better off visiting Orlando, Florida.
KINGS DOMINION
TIPS & ADVICE The Best Time To Go To Kings Dominion: If you want to
avoid crowds, weekdays are when to go to Kings Dominion. On
weekends, Saturdays are typically the most crowded. However, on
Sundays crowds are generally manageable.
Weekends in March, April, early May, late September and October
are generally less crowded than weekends in summer months. Crowds
also tend to be light on Father's Day in June.
Weeknights are the best time to go during the summer
months. When the park is open until 10pm, season pass holders may
enjoy going simply for dinner and a couple hours visiting attractions
when lines are short.
Events: Kings Dominion hosts several events through the
season, including concerts, large group events and traveling
promotions. Call the park or check its web site to see if
a major event will pack the park on the day you want to go.
Weather: Weather conditions appear to be the major
determining factor for attendance. Many visitors are locals from
the Richmond, VA and Washington, DC areas. They can wait for a
sunny day. Rainy days typically mean you will have the park to
yourself. Rainy days present an excellent opportunity to visit!
Click
here for the current Kings Dominion weather forecast.
Season Passes: Kings Dominion season passes are one of the
best deals in the theme park world. Four people (a family or four
unrelated individuals) can get passes for a few hundred dollars.
This is
not much more than the combined price of four single day tickets.
The
passes also provide free admission to other Paramount theme parks (in
Charlotte, Cincinnati, San Jose and Canada.) Be sure to pay the
few extra bucks for parking so you'll feel free to go anytime, even
just for a couple of hours.
Season pass holders can use the water park. They can
entertain the kids for a few hours. There's no pressure to see
all of the attractions in just one day. It also makes it easy to
go on a "low attendance rainy day" to enjoy repeated rides on the major
attractions.
Typically Kings Dominion offers its best prices on season passes
during the final weeks of the previous season (fall). Prices stay
low through the winter (think holiday gift?) and the first month of
operation. I've seen prices increase as the summer approaches.
Bottom line: Buy your passes in the fall,
winter or very early spring. This will give you the best price
and the most days at the park.
Season pass holders typically have a special
day early in the season and access to early ride times on some
major rides. Sometimes late in the season Kings Dominion will
add additional operating days to its fall schedule. These
"unscheduled
opening" days can be some of the best, because of low crowds and
Virginia's
outstanding fall weather.
Parking: Kings Dominion charges for parking.
It's best to find a space near the bus parking/kennel area.
This area is generally less crowded and very close to the front
gate.
When exiting the parking lot, note that exit
road may have two lanes of one-way traffic. At closing time
many times a single file exit line mistakenly forms in the left lane.
If the right hand exit line is open, use it!
Outside
Food/Convenience Stores: There is a 7-11 convenience
store, Burger King and a truck stop across the street from Kings
Dominion. These places generally have higher prices because of
limited competition and proximity to the park. In my experience,
you won't save much buying lunch at Burger King instead of inside the
park.
Kings Dominion has placed picnic tables in the far southeast
part of the auto parking lot. To find them,
follow the bus parking signs, then look for the picnic shelter roofs
near the kennel. You can leave food in your car and return
for a picnic lunch/dinner.
Food
and drinks can be brought into the park in a backpack or stroller
(no glass or booze.) Lockers can be rented inside (lockers
were $5/day last time I checked.)
Where To Eat At Kings Dominion: Food prices and quality at
Kings Dominion restaurants are typical of most amusements parks.
Many people like the quality of the food at Bubba Gump's (near
the Volcano), the corn dogs in Old Virginia, the pizza place near the
water park/Drop Zone, the kids food at Richard Scarry's Busytown Cafe
and the ice cream truck in Kidzville.
Fireworks: Kings Dominion occasionally may present
fireworks
displays, especially around July 4th. Displays usually happen at
closing
time. Fireworks are typically launched from behind the Volcano.
Fireworks
are best viewed from the park's "Congo" area.
Wrist Bands: Each ride has its own height requirement.
Kings
Dominion checks children's height at two locations. Children are
issued
color coded wristbands depending on their height.
One measuring station is located half way down International
Street.
The other is at the Kidzville Construction Company play area.
There
is sometimes a line on International Street. There is never a
line
at the Kidzville location.
Fast Passes: Kings Dominion has experimented with offering
"fast
passes" that allow you to avoid long lines on major rides by returning
at
a scheduled time. Use of this system is not widespread at Kings
Dominion.
Cell Phones: Kings Dominion is in rural Virginia.
However,
because it is immediately next to I-95 most cell phone work fine inside
the
park.
Exiting Kings Dominion: Extra care is needed when exiting
the
parking lot, especially at closing time. You will see a lot of
tired
and confused drivers doing dumb things. You will likely find
police
monitoring drivers just outside the park. Drive defensively.
Relax
and take a couple of extra minutes. Don't run the red lights
outside
the park (chances are police are watching.)
Remember
that exit road may have two lanes of one-way traffic. At closing
time many times a single file exit line mistakenly forms in the left
lane. If the right hand exit line is open, use it!
Take a backpack of snacks and water bottles into the parks.
An occasional drink and snack can keep spirits high.
If you're tired, your kids
are tired. Monitor that family attitude each
hour. Take a break before any “melt down” has a chance to occur.
Indoor shows and air conditioned restaurants can be
great for breaks on hot days.
Plan an hour or two in the
afternoon to return to your room for a little quiet time
or a nap. Leaving and returning to the parks isn't
difficult. Everyone has more fun when they have an opportunity
to recharge.
Stay hydrated. The Virginia sun will can dehydrate you in
a couple of hours. Drink lots of water or juice. Avoid
diuretics like coffee and cola.
Travel with a small first aid kit that includes bandages,
tweezers, cold/allergy medicine, lip balm and Aspirin. Someone
always gets a cut, splinter, chapped lips or headache at the worst
possible time.
Bring hats and sunscreen.
Spray Bottle: If you're visiting in the summer, bring one
of those spray water bottles with a built-in fan. They
work! These water bottles are cheap to buy at discount stores.
Prepare For Nightfall:
Bring layered warm clothes--it can get cool
at night (especially in the spring and fall.) Mosquitos and other
bugs typically aren't a problem inside the park.
Rain: Bring rain ponchos or trash bags for
everyone, in case of an afternoon thunderstorm. It's not uncommon
for Virginia thunderstorms to develop in the late afternoon. They
can pass after 30-45 minutes. This is long enough to chase away a
lot of people. If you wait out the rain, you may have the park to
yourself for the evening!
Expect to walk 3-5 miles on hot pavement. Comfortable
shoes are a must. Have bandages handy in case of blisters.
Purchase a set of FRS walkie-talkies. These allow your group
to split up and easily find each other. The FRS (Family Radio
Service) walkie-talkies cost less than $75/pair. You can find
them at places like Wal-Mart, Circuit City and
Radio Shack. Bring extra batteries.
Note: Be sure to buy the models with “privacy codes."
Program all of your walkie-talkies with the same code-then only you
will only be able to hear each other. Without the codes, you will
hear everyone else (a real problem because everyone in Orlando has
these radios.) The “code” models cost $20-40 more than basic
models, but are worth every penny.
If you travel by car, buy one of those 12 volt/120 volt TV/VCR
combinations. The kids LOVE watching movies. You can
even hook up you
video game system if you by a 12 volt-120 volt power inverter
(available at any major discount store or RadioShack.) Having
your video game system in the hotel room can be a wonderful distraction
for the kids.
Hotel
Pool: If you plan to use a hotel pool, bring flip-flops and
small pool toys (kids love to play with foam footballs and diving rings
at the hotel pool.)
KINGS DOMINION TOURING PLANS
Here's an efficient way
to visit if you only have one day to see the park. These plans
allows you to hit the major attractions at the
least crowded times. Choose a plan based on the age of the people
in your party.
TOURING PLAN FOR ADULTS, TEENS AND "BIG KIDS"
Arrive at the parking lot 30 minutes prior to opening. Park, buy
tickets and line up a the turnstiles. Workers may begin
processing tickets 15 minutes prior to opening. You may
then be allowed on International Street (but not into the ride areas)
until the published opening time. While waiting
move to the far end of International Street near the Eiffel Tower.
Get ready to move quickly once the barricades are removed.
1. Hypersonic
or Volcano:
Once the park opens, immediately go to Volcano (located to the
left of the Eiffel Tower on the park's east side.) You may
instead choose to immediately go to Hypersonic XLC (located to the
right of the Eiffel Tower on the park's west side.) Both these
rollercoasters have a low rider capacity and can have long lines
throughout the day. Visiting these attractions early insures
you'll get to ride.
2. Shockwave: After riding Volcano or
Hypersonic XLC, move to the middle rear of the park to ride
Shockwave (the "stand up" rollercoaster.) It is also a low
capacity coaster, but doesn't immediately become overcrowded.
3. Drop Zone:
Walk
across the street from Shockwave to experience the Drop Zone Stunt
Tower
free fall ride.
4. Flight
Of Fear and Anaconda:
Now head to the southeast side of the park (near Volcano) to ride
the dark "Flight of Fear" rollercoaster and the Anaconda steel coaster.
5. Rebel
Yell: Backtrack to the southwest side of the park. Ride
the Rebel Yell rollercoaster. Ride frontwards first, then
backwards.
6. Ricochet
and Hurler:
Head west from the Rebel Yell. Ride Ricochet (wild mouse
coaster) and the Hurler (a fast, intense wooden rollercoaster.)
7. Grizzly:
Move north into Old Virginia to the Grizzly wooden rollercoaster.
Enjoy the unique ride through the trees.
8. Log
Flume and White Water Canyon: Head north and ride the Log
Flume and White Water Canyon rides on the park's northwest side.
9. Space
Surfer: Walk east under the Eiffel
Tower. Ride the Space Surfer in Nickelodeon Central.
10. Avalanche:
Head east to the Avalanche bobsled ride, next to Volcano.
TOURING PLAN FOR FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN
Arrive at the parking lot 30 minutes prior to opening time. Park,
buy tickets and line up a the turnstiles. Workers may begin
processing tickets 15
minutes prior to opening. You may then be allowed on
International Street (but not into the ride areas) until the published
opening
time.
While waiting, get a wrist band for your child at the
height measuring station near the Berserker swinging ship ride.
Once you have a wrist band, move to the far end of International
Street near the Eiffel Tower. Get ready to move quickly once the
barricades are removed.
1. Head immediately to the Rugrats
Toonpike (just east of the Eiffel Tower in Nickelodeon Central.)
It's important to ride this attraction early. It has low
rider capacity and frequently has long lines throughout the day.
2. Go next door. Ride the Taxi
Jam mini-steel rollercoaster.
3. Next to Taxi Jam is Scooby
Doo's Ghoster Coaster, a mini wooden rollercoaster. Ride it
with all but the smallest or most timid of children.
4. Leave Kidzville. Head east to Old Virginia.
Ride the Blue
Ridge Tollway (Gas powered Model T cars.)
5. Return to Kidzville. Ride all of the traditional
kids' rides (cars, boats, swings, airplanes, bumper cars, cave.)
6. Plan to see any shows
that appeal to your
children.
6. Play at the Kidz
Construction Company playground. Have your child's height
measured and get a wristband from the attendant at the Kidz
Construction Company.
Other attractions for children: Depending on your child's
age, they may like the log flume or the traditional amusement park
rides in Old
Virginia. Kings Dominion has reasonable height requirements
on some
of its big rides. Children as young as 3 may be able to ride
on the Avalanche,
Grizzly, Hurler and Rebel Yell rollercoasters. Young children
may also be tall enough to ride the Scrambler (near Volcano), Space Surfer in Nickelodeon
Central
and the spinning swings (The Grove.) These are "big kid" rides that may
very
well scare younger kids. However, if you have adventurous
children,
these rides can be a great way to introduce them to the thrills of
riding
the "grown up" rides. Work your way through progressively more
thrilling
rides. Start with the smaller coasters listed above (Taxi Jam,
Scooby
Doo.) If your kids like them, try the Avalanche. If they
like
the Avalanche, try the Grizzly... then Rebel Yell... and finally the
Hurler.
Extraordinarily adventurous kids might even consider a ride on
the
Drop Zone Stunt Tower. Drop Zone has a surprising low height
requirement.
TIP FOR FAMILIES - Special Services For Infants & Toddlers:
Families with small children should take advantage of the staffed Cave
Kids lost parents facility. Inside you will find air
conditioning, diaper changing facilities, a family
bathroom, a waiting area for the kids, drinking fountain,
a microwave oven and private nursing facilities.
The Cave Kids building looks like a small house. It is
located in Kidzville near the Taxi Jam rollercoaster.
TIP FOR FAMILIES - Baby Swap While Waiting: Parents may be able
to request a
"baby swap" on rides. This is a real benefit to adults
traveling with young children. The entire family can wait in line
for a "grown up" ride. Once you are at the boarding station, you
can ask the attendant for a "baby swap." One adult will remain
in the station with the young child while the other adult rides.
When the riding adult returns, he/she waits in the station with
the child while the other adult rides. This saves the family from
having to wait in line twice.
Note: Some families have expressed surprise to learn about
Gay Days at Kings Dominion. Typically there is one day
each
season when gay and lesbian groups organize a park visit.
Historically
Kings Dominion has not made this an officially promoted event.
Rather, gay and lesbian organizations use the park's group
services on one particular day, not unlike religious, school or
business groups do. During one family visit to Kings Dominion I
was surprised to find out that it was Gay Day. I noticed many
couples wearing special Gay Day tee-shirts. Other than that it
was a regular day at the park. Gay Day participants are advised
to wear something that's red or rainbow colored. You can
find out when the Gay Days event is held by calling the park or by clicking here
for the Gay Days web site.
THE WATER PARK AT KINGS DOMINION: WATERWORKS WaterWorks
is the official name for the Kings Dominion Water Park. Admission
to the water park is free with paid admission to the Kings Dominion
amusement park. WaterWorks focuses mainly on individual water
slides. There are no family (group) slides.
WaterWorks operates only during the summer months. It
generally opens around Memorial Day and closes on Labor Day. The
water park operating hours generally start at lunch time and end around
dinner time. Operating hours can change. You will want to
check them in advance of your visit (click
here for current Kings Dominion operating schedule.)
The water park features two
areas for kids to play, a splash
house, a wave
pool, a lazy river,
several medium
sized adult slides, tube slides and two towers with tall
slides. Here are some tips for visiting the Kings Dominion
water park:
Swimsuits: All visitors must wear swimsuits (not street
shorts or pants.)
Do not wear swimsuits that have any kind of rivets, zippers,
snaps, buckles or buttons. These suits are not allowed on any of
the slides. The lifeguards will inspect your suit before you use
the slides.
See-through suits and suits that the park deems as
"too revealing" are not allowed. I have never seen a thong suit
here, so I assume they are not permitted.
Slide Rules For Flip-Flops, Swim Shoes and Shirts:
These items are not allowed on slides. You will be asked
to remove them and carry them with you as you slide.
Footwear: Wearing flip-flops, swim shoes or some other kind of
footwear is a good idea while walking around the water park. On
hot days the pavement becomes extremely hot. The stairway to the
tall FreeFallin' slides tends to have puddles (you may feel more
comfortable wearing footwear as you climb.)
Life Jackets: Life jackets are available for
non-swimmers and children.
Height Restrictions: Note that there are significant
height requirements for children who want to use the medium and large
sized water slides. Some visitors are surprised that the
requirements are has high as they are. Parents should be ready to
deal with
disappointed children who may feel confident to use the slides but
aren't
permitted to do so. The height requirement is a particularly
thorny
issue on the small slides at the Splash House.
Lockers: Lockers are provided a full day rental basis.
Shade & Sun Umbrellas: Several large sun
umbrellas have been installed to create shade. The umbrellas
can be found near the kids areas (both in the front and rear of the
water park.)
Lines For Slides: I've notice over the course of several
seasons that the lines for slides sometimes move slowly. The
lifeguards are meticulous about insuring the previous rider has exited
the slide prior to the next rider entering. I've also noticed
slowdowns because sometimes only one lifeguard is stationed at the
bottom of a multi-slide tower. This single lifeguard must split
time between several slides. This can increase the wait
significantly.
I choose to view this strict rule-following as something that
increases safety. Regardless, a little patience my be needed when
waiting to slide.
Water Chlorination: Because the water park is a public
swimming facility, the water is kept well chlorinated. Bring
goggles for the kids and anyone with sensitive eyes. You should
shower at day's end. If you're going to be in the water a lot,
you may want to bring an older swimsuit. Prolonged exposure to
chlorine may also affect your hair.
Warm Water: The warmest water is found on the Baja Bends
water slides (the short tower closest to the Rebel Yell with
four slides.) The long slides appear to collect a lot of solar
heat, which is in turn transferred to the water.
Warm water also can be found at the Big Wave Bay wave pool.
I assume this is because pool water is used to cool the giant
wave making machines.
Hydration: It's easy to become dehydrated while at the
water park. It can be extremely hot during the summer.
Bring a water bottle and refill it. The park also sells
large,
refillable soda cups. You'll spend about $10 on the cup, but may
then buy refills for about a dollar.
Snacks: Buy snacks or bring a backpack with food into the
park. You'll need the extra "fuel" for a hard day at play.
Sunscreen: Be sure to bring sunscreen and reapply it every
hour. Click
here for tips on effectively using sunscreen.
Swim Diapers: Swim diapers are necessary for
infants and toddlers. Be sure to bring your own. In an
emergency, check at the main gate gift store to see if any swim diapers
are in stock.
Best Time To Visit: Weekdays are when to go to the Kings
Dominion water park. On weekends, crowds thin out during the last
couple
of operating hours. Dinner time (5-8pm) is a great time to visit.
Don't be shy about visiting the water park on rainy or cold days.
You can ride every slide in less than an hour... then warm up.
The
water in the wave pool is almost always warm.

ACCOMMODATIONS AT KINGS DOMINION: HOTELS
AND CAMPGROUND
Kings Dominion does not operate any official lodging facilities.
However, there is camping and two hotels in the
immediate area.
The Kings Dominion Campground offers nearby
camping (about a mile from the park's main gate.) The Kings
Dominion Campground offers RV hook-ups, camp sites and cabins. It
operates a shuttle bus to the park. Call (800) 922-6710 or (804)
876-5355 for reservations. Ask about current discounts.
The Best Western King's Quarters is the hotel
that is immediately adjacent to Kings Dominion. It actively
caters to Kings Dominion visitors. It operates a shuttle bus to
the front gate. Call (800) 528-1234 or (804) 876-3321
for reservations. Ask about hotel and admission discounts. Click
here to see King's Quarters web site.
The Econo Lodge hotel is across the street from
Kings Dominion. Some people feel this hotel may be
more closely associated with the nearby truck stop than the amusement
park. It does not offer shuttle bus service to Kings Dominion.
Call (804) 876-3712 for reservations. Ask about specials.
